The Future of Purpose – Keynote Launch

I’m a big believer in the rhythms of business, from finance and strategy to the physical seasons we experience. One of the most important of these (at least in Australia) is the end of the year and the summer break.

But rather than treat this as an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the year that’s been, I increasingly see clients pushing to get ‘just one more thing done’ before Christmas.

This additional pressure to meet deadlines and finish projects means the summer break has become less and less about enjoyment, and instead a time for recovery (and painfully, many of the ‘rush jobs’ finished in December end up being reopened in the new year anyway).

What if instead of squeezing a little more out of people in December, we could use that time to reconnect them with what matters? What if you could create the space to reflect, celebrate and then give your team permission to step away from work, spend time with family and friends, and actually recharge?

When we’re caught up in the operational rhythms of an organisation, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. We focus on the work that needs to get done, without always stopping to consider what that work contributes to or why it matters.

The end of the year gives us a natural opportunity to change that.

Imagine bringing your team together to reflect on the last 12 months. To recognise what they’ve accomplished, celebrate the work they’ve done and understand how it contributes to the bigger reason the organisation exists.

It’s also an opportunity to capture the lessons from that work. What should we continue doing? What should we accelerate? And what do we need to stop doing?

This isn’t just about reviewing performance. It’s about helping people understand the value of their contribution and giving them a clearer sense of what they’re working towards.

One of my clients has recently booked me to deliver The Future of Purpose, a new keynote and workshop designed to explore the role of purpose in a world increasingly flooded by AI-generated ideas and thinking.

The workshop uses purpose as a lens to reflect on the work a team has been doing, the way it has been doing it, and what it wants to start, stop and maintain in the year ahead.

It’s one example of how organisations can use this natural rhythm to do something more meaningful than simply close out the year.

The end of the year can be a time to reflect, recognise and learn. The beginning of the next can be an opportunity to take those lessons forward, re-engage people and apply them strategically.

As leaders, we have a choice in how we approach this time. We can keep pushing until the last possible moment, or we can make the time to recognise and thank people for what they’ve achieved, reconnect with why it matters and give them permission to enjoy a well-earned break.

What might change if you were more intentional with how you close out a year that’s been and prepare people for one that’s about to commence?

NEW KEYNOTE & WORKSHOP

The Future of Purpose

When the possibilities are endless, what should we do?

In this provocative and optimistic keynote, Simon takes audiences on a journey through humanity’s relationship with technology to understand what is happening now and what might happen next. As technology once again transforms human capability, The Future of Purpose explores why people and organisations driven to make a meaningful difference in the world are more important than ever.

Delivered as a keynote or a hands-on workshop, it’s ideal as a reflective closing session, or as a way to help your team look back on the year and decide what to start, stop and maintain in the year ahead.
